CONCLUDING SENTENCES

Back to Writing Workshop
🧩 What Is a Concluding Sentence?
A concluding sentence is the last sentence in a paragraph. It sums up the point you just made. It doesn’t repeat your topic sentence—it wraps up your argument and shows how your ideas connect.

✍️ When and Where to Use Them
  • In single paragraphs: Always include a concluding sentence to make your point clear and to give your paragraph a sense of completion.
  • In essays:
    • Introductory paragraph: Your concluding sentence is your thesis statement.
    • Body paragraphs: Use it to transition to the next idea or link back to your thesis.
    • Concluding paragraph: End with a sentence that wraps up your whole argument and gives your reader something to think about or do next.

🚫 Common Mistake
Even great writers sometimes forget to include concluding sentences. Don’t skip them—they’re key to making your writing feel connected, complete, and persuasive.

Example: Concluding Sentence For a Single Paragraph

Try reading the paragraph without reading the concluding sentences first; then read through it a second time to help you see how a concluding sentence ties everything together.
🌍TOPIC: What can we do to help stop climate change?

If we want to stop climate change, we need to keep changing our habits so we use less energy and create less waste. Small actions like recycling or turning off the lights when we leave a room are a good start, but they’re not enough. For example, when we go shopping, we should think carefully about what we’re buying. Making and shipping products uses a lot of resources, and when we buy things we don’t need or things that break easily, they end up in the landfill, which wastes those resources. That’s why it’s better to buy fewer, good-quality items that are actually useful, instead of just buying stuff we want in the moment. We should also look for ways to cut down on what we use at home. Every time we grab something disposable, we should ask if there’s a reusable option. For instance, instead of paper towels, we could use cloth rags. We can also save resources by changing our daily habits, like taking shorter showers, eating less meat, or walking instead of driving when we can. If we all keep checking in with ourselves and making small changes, we can live more eco-friendly lives and help fight climate change.

Example: Concluding Sentences in an Essay

As you read this essay, notice how concluding sentences help tie the whole argument together in an essay. In fact, you could try reading just the thesis and concluding sentences to see if you understand the main points of the argument without reading the whole thing.
🌍TOPIC: What can we do to help stop climate change?

Climate change is a serious issue that affects a lot of people in our world today. Because of this, many people are becoming more aware of how their actions impact the environment, and they are starting to make small changes in their daily lives to help. However, just doing a few easy things is not enough. The good news is that if we keep adding new, eco-friendly habits to our routines, we can help protect the planet and save money too.

One of the easiest places to start is when we go shopping. We live in a world where people love buying new stuff, but buying too much—especially cheap things that break quickly—puts a lot of pressure on the environment. If we buy less, we save money and use fewer resources. Choosing high-quality items that last longer is better for the planet and our wallets. Buying second-hand is also a smart choice because it is cheaper and keeps things out of the landfill. Changing how we shop can make a big difference.

We can also help the environment by changing what we eat. Meat is usually the most expensive part of our grocery bill, and it takes significantly more resources to produce than plant-based foods. Eating less meat—even just once a week—can save money and help the planet. Another great idea is to buy seasonal fruits and vegetables from local farmers. It is often cheaper than the grocery store, and it creates less pollution because the food does not have to travel as far. These changes to our eating habits are good for our health, the environment, and our budgets.

If we want to fight climate change, we need to keep looking for ways to use fewer resources in our everyday lives. There are lots of chances to make small changes that help. Taking shorter showers saves water and lowers the hot water bill. Using reusable items like cloth rags instead of paper towels cuts down on waste and saves money. Walking to nearby places instead of driving helps the environment, saves gas, and is good exercise too. These habits are easy to find if we pay attention, and they can make our lives healthier, cheaper, and greener.

If we ignore these chances to live more sustainably, it will cost us. We will spend more money, and we will damage the environment we depend on. Starting with small changes is great, but we absolutely cannot stop there. We need to keep looking for ways to live greener if we want to help stop climate change.
