Tips for Paragraph Responses

When you have to respond to questions in paragraph format, there are a few easy things you can do to help make your answer stronger.

  • Write a quick outline to organize your ideas.
  • Remember to PQA (see the image to the left): Put the question in the answer (rephrase the question in your own words, so that it is clear how you are going to answer the question).
  • Write in your own words instead of copying from the text.
  • Use evidence and examples from the text to support and explain your ideas.
  • Use key vocabulary from the text/lesson/unit.
  • Write in complete sentences.
  • Wrap it up at the end with a proper concluding sentence.
  • Proofread it before handing it in.
  • ACE (see image to the left) your paragraph by remembering to answer the question directly, citing evidence that supports your answer and extending your answer by going into more detail about the points you are making.
