How to Take Cornell Notes:

  • Divide each page in your notebook into 4 sections (it helps to have a bunch ready to go ahead of time).
  • The topic of the lesson or reading goes at the top of the page
  • Take notes in section 3. Use point form and write in your own words.
  • Create study questions in section 2 that correspond with the information in your notes. This section is also handy for highlighting key vocabulary.
  • Later that day, read through the notes and summarize the main ideas in section 4. The summary should be a short paragraph of only 3-4 sentences.

How to Use Cornell Notes to Study:

  • For Quick Review: Simply read through all your summaries in section 4.
  • For More In-Depth Review: Cover up section 3 with another piece of paper. Ask yourself the questions from section 2. Lift the paper to see if you got the answer right. Highlight any questions that you got wrong to help you identify areas where you need to spend more time reviewing.
  • Use with a Study Guide: Make a set of notes for each lesson or topic listed in your study guide
